Middletown Blue Raiders Midgets win big vs. Polar Bears; Ponies also victorious

The Middletown Blue Raiders Midgets froze out the Northern Polar Bears on Saturday, Sept. 2, winning 45-8 at home.

The Middletown Ponies also won, 28-0, while the Peewees lost 22-12.

In the Midgets game, the Middletown defense held the Polar Bears on the opening possession of the first quarter. On fourth down, the Polar Bears punted to running back Auric Bryant. Bryant accelerated down the sideline returning the punt for a touchdown for the first score of the game. The Raiders missed the extra point kick and were up 6-0.

On the following defensives series for the Blue Raiders, defensive lineman Tajae Broady (the 13-year-old is 6 feet 2 inches tall, weighs 196 pounds and wears a size 14 cleat) stripped a Polar Bear runner, causing a fumble that would set the Polar Bears back for a 10-yard loss. Broadie who would have seven solo tackles and two sacks on the day, caused another fumble at the end of the first quarter, forcing the Polar Bears to punt again on fourth down.

The second quarter opened with the Polar Bears attempting to punt, but a bad snap caused the punter to chase the ball, Safety Bamm Appleby pursued and tackled the punter and recovered the fumble, setting the Raider offense up on the 5 yard line.

Running back Tate Leach on a 5-yard burst would score the Raiders’ second TD of the day, making the score 12-0. Bryant would run the extra point in, making the score 13-0 Middletown.

On third down during the next offensive series for the Polar Bears, Leach (playing cornerback) snagged a Northern pass and returned it 30 yards for a pick-6, making the score 19-0. On the extra point, Appleby, playing quarterback, rolled out to his right found Bryant in the end zone for an 8-yard pass making the score 20-0.

Northern’s next possession ended with a sack on fourth down by defensive lineman Aiden Cannon to return the ball to the Raider offense. Bryant would score again, dashing 30 yards and pin-balling off defenders to make the score 26-0. The Raiders missed the extra point attempt. The first half ended with the Raiders in control 26-0.

The Raiders second team offense and defense took the controls for the second half. On the opening kickoff, Leach would return the kick 75 yards but the play was called back after a holding penalty. On the following offense series Leach threw a 20-yard pass to receiver Nyzier Arango. The following play running back Tito Matthews bolted 8 yards around the left end scoring another Raider TD making the score 32-0. The extra point attempt was missed.

Northern started the fourth quarter on its own 35 yard line. The Polar Bears scored their first and only TD of the game on a dump pass to a running back that went 20 yards for a touchdown, making the score 32-6. The Polar Bears kicked the extra point, making the score 32-8.

On the following kickoff, Bryant would score his third TD of the day as he covered 72 yards to make the score 38-8. Matthews would run the extra point in making the score 39-8.

On the Raider kickoff after the TD, linebacker Noah McNeal recovered a Polar Bear fumble and once again return the ball to the Raider offense. On the following offensive series running back Caden Paul exploded straight forward and past Northern defenders to score a 35-yard touchdown run to make the score 45-8.

The Blue Raider Midgets are now 2-0 on the season.
