P&J website will go dark without community support
Irreplaceable digital archives could be lost forever
As you know, the P&J ceased publication on July 1, 2020 after proudly covering the Middletown area for 166 years. When our web site pressandjournal.com goes dark on December 31, 2020, so will access to the rich archives of stories and photographs the newspaper has chronicled since our web site first went live many years ago. It currently costs the business $350 per month to keep the web site accessible to the public but we no longer have the means to continue indefinitely. We are looking for a person or organization to permanently preserve this irreplaceable archive so future generations will have searchable internet access to the history of our community. If you are able to help please send us an email at email@example.com
As the loss of community newspapers in the United States continues, we urge you to visit The New York Times and the Poynter Institute to read more about the alarming closures of newspapers due to the COVID-19 pandemic. You'll find a mention of the Press & Journal in the Poynter article. It is sobering to note how many recently shuttered papers began publishing in the 1800s.
